Introducing the Chopard L.U.C XPS Poinçon de Genève Limited Edition
Back in August, I had the pleasure of visiting Chopard's Madison Avenue boutique. I explored the collection, conversed with brand representatives, and learned the history of this 155 year-old watch manufacture. Following my visit, I posted a write-up about two incredible dress watches which blew me away. On one piece, the chamfering on the case was superb, the circular graining on the movement was also an elegant touch, and the dial (porcelain, by the way) was pretty cool. The other wristwatch was a ladies' timepiece, and had a Calatrava-like case shape as well as a stunning in-house movement featuring a micro-rotor. At the time, I dreamt of Chopard creating this ladies' watch in a men's size; today, they delivered.
The L.U.C XPS Poinçon de Genève is a robust, 39mm wristwatch housed in a 7.13mm thin, platinum case. A slate-blue dial with sub seconds bears the renowned “Poinçon de Genève” logo, a symbol of excellence in Swiss watchmaking that is only given to watch manufacturers who maintain the highest level of standards throughout production. Furthermore, a sporty, hand-sewn "marine-blue" alligator strap is included with the watch, complementing the dial.
Similarly to the aforementioned ladies' variation of this wristwatch, the mechanism is automatic and powered by a micro-rotor. The micro-rotor concept has been used in many important vintage watches, such as Universal Geneve's Polerouter and Patek Philippe's 3940. This movement is referred to as the calibre L.U.C 96.01-L and is mostly crafted by hand. An impressive 65-hour power reserve, COSC (chronometer) certification and twin barrel technology certainly add to this watch's wow-factor.
